About Us

Goings Electric Supply was founded by Harry & Hope Goings in 1976 with the encouragement of their son, Robert (Bob) Goings. Bob worked for an electrical wholesaler in Massachusetts and recommended that his father, Harry, consider this line of business.

In the mid 1950's Harry was run over by a Michigan Pay loader which crushed every bone in his upper torso. He was told by doctors that he would never lift anything heavier than a pencil. Through sheer determination and the loving support of his wife, Hope, he recovered and started his own business as a mechanic in the early sixties.

Harry built a good reputation through his hard work and honesty. As the years went by, arthritis set in, but Harry continued to work as hard as ever to provide for his family. With Bob's encouragement, Harry invested $5,000.00 to start an electrical supply business in one of the bays of the garage, "Goings' Gulf". It was agreed that when Harry could fully transition from the garage into electrical supplies, Bob would move to Maine and help run the business. In 1977, Bob and his family moved to Maine. Bob worked as a Road Salesman, as well as delivery, counter and everything in between, while Harry ran inside sales, inventory and purchasing, etc. The business grew and incorporated in October of 1981. In 1982 Harry & Hope's daughter Kim joined the team, then their son Steve, and in 1985 their daughter Kathi and the first non-family employee, Rick Paul.

We were affected by the flood in 1987, losing $100,000.00 worth of inventory and three vehicles. The inventory was not insured for flood, so we took out a low interest loan with the Small Business Administration to repurchase inventory. We had plans of moving across the road to a lot on Rt. 2 which then needed to be delayed.

Fortunately, we were blessed with growth and a loyal customer base. In 1994 we were able to build a 60' × 120' building on Route 2 containing a 30' × 50' lighting showroom. It was definitely a step up from our former location.

Some of our employees have changed over the years and Harry Goings passed away at the age of 72 on February 7, 2003. I am his daughter Kathi and his successor. My mother, Hope (now retired) and I now own the business my father and brother worked so hard to build. My father taught me how important it is to work hard, help others, and have integrity. I have the highest respect for his teachings.

It is because of our loyal employees and valued customers that we are where we are today. If you are currently a customer, thank you! If you are not, please give us the opportunity to serve you. It will be our pleasure.
